Recently, I got to thinking about real estate words that sell versus real estate words that make for an interesting listing. I mean, sometimes it’s appropriate to add buzz words to your real estate listing. Then again, sometimes those buzzy words can work against you.

Case in point: I was reviewing the ad for a Pittsburgh condominium in a renovated church. As you can imagine, between the soaring ceiling and the stained glass windows, the listing photography was out of this world.

However, the words to describe the place? Well, honestly, they were cliche.

The listing agent might have called them heavenly but that’s only because they kept using adjectives with double meanings related to a house of worship. Like how you would be at peace in the bedroom or feel inspired in the bathroom or how you could touch the heavens from the view. You get the point.

Choose your real estate words carefully

Again, that’s clever wordsmithing but not words that will actually sell a home. Or a house or a condo built inside a renovated church. Because when it comes to making the place you’re selling sound enticing, you want to choose your words carefully.

Homebuyers aren’t stupid. For example, homebuyers in New York City know that something that’s charming means it’s small. Homebuyers elsewhere might read between the lines that the ocean at your front door means you won’t be able to get floor insurance.

On the other hand, if I were to read a real estate listing with the words “turnkey” or “move-in ready,” I know that this is a house that will sell fast. These words and phrases tell me that I won’t need to do anything to this home to make it liveable after closing day. And that’s attractive.

List of real estate words that sell

All that being said, I’ve put together this alphabetical list of real estate words and phrases that sell. This includes not only descriptions of a home but features that the home might have. These are concise and easy-to-understand words and phrases that should make your real estate listing stand out from the competition.

Sure, some of these might be considered real estate buzz words, but if they work in getting a property sold, who cares? Finally, when in doubt, use a thesaurus to make sure your words accurately describe your home and entice someone to schedule a showing and make an offer. And, it goes without saying, make sure the words and phrases you’re using to sell your home are, in fact, true. Don’t call a bungalow a farmhouse or brag about a house being bright and airy when it’s dark and drab.
